Prof. James Malone-Lee

Malone Lee

It is with sadness that we share the news that long-time IUGA member, James Malone-Lee, passed away on February 19 following a brief illness.

Affectionately known as “the Prof,” Malone-Lee is best known for his pioneering research into the development of a scientifically validated treatment for patients suffering with recurrent UTI. His ability to spot potential one didn’t know they possessed and find the root cause for a failed experiment made him the go-to mentor for many young researchers. Through the many students he taught and mentored, his legacy will live on. His accolades and academic achievements culminated in his recent book, “Cystitis Unmasked,” published in 2021. With the right mix of scientific fact, philosophy, and humor, this book resonates with both the clinical and lay audiences.

Professor Malone-Lee was a noted personality at both national and international conferences. He was known for asking tough questions and challenging non-evidence-based practice, both of which were sometimes met with mixed emotions by colleagues. While the faint-hearted panicked about their methods and statistics, the clinical scientists welcomed his critique with enthusiasm. His attention to detail, speedy statistical analysis mid-presentation, and his knowledge on most topics in urogynecology were enviable.

As the IUGA Family, we share our heartfelt condolences with all who knew and admired Professor James Malone-Lee.
