Knowing surgical outcomes is critical in planning treatment and forms the cornerstone of surgical practice. This SIG has been set up to help members look at how best to assess outcomes. The aims of the SIG are to increase awareness of the importance of measuring outcomes, to develop strategies around the world to help implement data capture, and longer term to influence development of tools to improve both data capture and using data to assess clinical practice and drive improvement programs. An example would be using “big data” to drive personalized medicine and decision making through analysis of patient variables pre-operatively in predicting outcome. This SIG was formed in recognition of the need to raise awareness of the use of data to inform practice.
