The Maternity Team from Medway Maritime Hospital in Kent have been awarded the Johnson Award for Excellence in Maternity Care at the Royal College of Midwives annual awards. The team were given this award for STOMP (Stop Traumatic OASIS Morbidity Project), which is an ongoing multidisciplinary programme aiming to reduce the incidence of 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears. STOMP is a simple series of measures for conduct of the second stage, accompanied by a programme of education and publicity for staff. Using STOMP, the team have sustainably reduced the incidence of 3rd and 4th degree tears for women delivering at Medway from 5% to 1%. The award was accepted by Maya Basu and Dot Smith on behalf of the team at an awards ceremony in London on the 7th March.
