Dr. Antonio Macciò M.D. received his M.D. degree from the University of Cagliari, and his postgraduate specialization was in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medical Oncology. He is Chief of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at Businco Hospital, Regional Referral Center for Cancer Disease, Cagliari, Italy. His research interests include pathophysiology and treatment of cancer-related anorexia/cachexia, oxidative stress, pathogenesis and treatment of cancer anemia, tumor immunology, immunocompetence of cancer patients and immunotherapy, and combined modality treatment of gynecological tumors. He is author of 98 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals (total impact factor 226,86; h index 22).

He currently participates actively in the coordination of the research activity of the Laboratory of Medical Oncology at the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Cagliari.

His research interests include pathophysiology and treatment of cancer-related anorexia/cachexia, oxidative stress, pathogenesis and treatment of cancer anemia, tumor immunology, immunocompetence of cancer patients and immunotherapy, pathogenesis and treatment of cancer- related anemia, pathogenetic mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity, inflammation and ovarian cancer, pathogenesis and prognostic markers of hormone-dependent breast cancer, palliative and supportive therapy of cancer patients. The PI has participated to more than 40 randomised phase III clinical trials in the last 3 years and he is highly experienced in conducting trials with Good Clinical Practice. In the past few years the PI has collaborated to 2 research grants from MIUR (Italian Ministry of University and Research).

He is currently recognized as an international expert in the field of cachexia (20th place according to Biomed Expert, Elsevier Inc.).

In the last year he has received the italian national scientific qualification for Full Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
